How healthy is your relay list?

One event. Every relay.

Blaastr is a broadcast relay. Add one address to your client and every note you sign goes out to hundreds of relays, your NIP-65 write relays, and the read relays of everyone you reply to or mention. Each event gets a delivery report, and dead relays are swapped for standbys.

Questions

What is a nostr relay?

A relay is a server that stores and forwards nostr events. Your client publishes notes to the relays you write to, and reads your feed from the relays you read from. Nobody owns the network, so choosing relays is how you choose who carries your data.

How many relays should I use?

Most people do well with four to eight. Fewer than three and your notes can vanish when one relay goes down. More than ten mostly adds bandwidth and slows your client without reaching many more people.

What does the NIP-65 download contain?

An unsigned kind 10002 event with one r tag per relay, marked read, write, or both. Paste it into a tool that signs events, or publish it from the My list page with a NIP-07 browser extension.

How do I check if my note is on a relay?

Open the event finder and paste the note ID (note1 or nevent) or a link to it. It queries your relays, the author's write relays and the most popular relays, then shows which ones store it.

Do you store my relay list or keys?

No. My list lives in your browser's local storage. Publishing uses your extension to sign, and Nostr Relays never sees your private key.

Are paid relays worth it?

Paid relays charge a small one time or monthly fee for write access, which keeps spam low. They make good read relays for a cleaner feed. Pair one with a few free, popular relays so your notes still reach everyone.
